What linux-OS would work on a travelmate 435LCi with 1GB ram, 40GB HDD and a P4 CPU?

Has anyone done this before? Should I stay with WinXP on this? Would love to learn from someone else's experience.

I'd suggest trying to install the Cinnamon-flavored 32-bit Linux Mint 18.3 version alongside Windows XP, that is dual boot. I'm not sure if your older BIOS can handle it but it's worth a try. It's probably one of the most refined Linux GUIs which can be configured to have the look, feel and operation of WinXP and Win7 GUIs. https://linuxmint.com/release.php?id=31  .  I'd first recommended shrinking the WinXP partition using WinXP's built-in disk management utility to make room for the Linux and its swap partition. Then download the Linux Mint iso file from the above website. Then download and use a freeware program called Rufus https://rufus.akeo.ie/ to make a bootable MBR partitioned FAT32 USB installation stick from this iso file. Rufus only works on a WinVista or above Windows version so you'd have to find another computer to make this stick. Then change the boot order in your BIOS so the USB stick is first in the boot order and fire away. The installation is virtually automatic if your machine can handle it. Jack E/NJ

that might be pushing it to run cinnamon with 1Gb ram.  As your coming from XP, the Mate version might suit you visually and its lighter on the resources too.  (xfce is even lighter).  When you make a bootable USB stick, you can "live" boot it without installing on your hdd first to see if you like it before properly installing it

thinking about it, another windowy option as you're coming from xp might be Zorin.  This is also an ubuntu based distribution so updates etc come from ubuntu's repositories same as happens with Mint.    (they do a paid for version but the core version is free free free.  Stick with the free if you want to try it live booting as before, the paid won't bring anything more to the average home user)

I don't have your computer model, but I installed Lubuntu (Intel x86) on an old Windows XP computer.  It worked ok.  It's pretty unenjoyable using Windows XP era hardware in 2018......no matter how you slice it.  Your computer's graphics capabilities aren't really good enough for the modern internet with any OS.  Windows XP isn't safe to use.

Ultimately I would recommend just getting a new computer.

If you're on a tight budget, there's some pretty good deals out there.  Or deals out there.

I've been messing with an old xp laptop today (single core, 1gb ram, 20 gb hdd) and put 32 bit Zorin OS 12 Lite on it and was very surprised because it's very good - looks nicer (if you like a nice clean desktop unlike 10) and it's faster than it was when i first purchased it (ubuntu based so anything that works on ubuntu should work on this too).   That might just be the one to revamp your laptop to better than when you first got it years ago (and it'll be a lot more secure too).  I didn't test with Zorin Core (lack of time).  Hope this helps.

@Gawain Did you try to dual boot, or wipe WinXP or just use another HDD to save WinXP? Jack E/NJ

i wiped it then installed (still have the xp disks somewhere).  I'm very surprised it worked for a laptop made in 2002 with 512mb ram (i got it wrong originally!).  Has a whopping great 8mb on the ATI card.
