Why does e-571 die randomly?

Hi all,

I've had my Aspire E1-571 for just over seven years now. Had no problems until recently it switches itself off every few hours- dies just like that. I then have to log back in etc. Is this inevitable with its age and lack of maintenance? If so, do you think it's a simple fix of getting fan replaced or whatever or should I just accept that it has a had a good run and chuck it?

Thanks,
Adam

Please disconnect the charger and remove the battery. Unlock the battery lock, slide the battery release latch to remove the battery.  Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Connect only the charger and power On the laptop to check the issue. If the laptop is working fine, shut down the laptop insert the battery and check the laptop.

What do you mean by "log back in"? Does it turn completely off? Or does it go into sleep mode and you touch a key and the Windows log in screen appears again? Do it do this whether or not it's plugged? Jack E/NJ

Hi Jack- it does it whether plugged in or not, and it turns completely off (not sleep mode). Do you think I might need a new battery? As I said I've not changed anything after seven years of using almost every day.

Does the battery widget in the tray also have a redX or any messages hovering it ? Jack E/NJ

No mate, completely normal. In fact it hasn't died without the charger plugged-in. It makes me think the fan is broke after so many years and the laptop turns off to stop over-heating? Although in saying that, despite being hot, it's not that hot around the fan when it happens.

    >>> it switches itself off every few hours>>>

How reliable/repeatable is this "few hours" behavior? What happens if you leave the machine on but not disturb, physically move, use, or otherwise touch it? Does it still shut off? The reason I ask, is that some mainboards have a normally-off safety interlock switch that will cut power if the case applies insufficient pressure (from misalignment, warpage, etc) to keep the switch in the on state. The fix is usually simple involving tape and spacers. Jack E/NJ

The machine is stationary on the same hard, flat surface. It seems to only happen when I'm gaming- although I'v been doing the same for as long as I've had the laptop and had no problems. Knackered processor maybe?

Nope, overheated processor! You probably got dust bunnies holed up inside clogging the CPU fan & fins. I'd first try alternately vacuuming the air intake port and blowing air thru the air exhaust port a few times to try to chase them out. That should do the trick. If not, open the case and sweep them out with a ladies cosmetic brush. Jack E/NJ

Got it. Would make sense since I haven't cleaned the internals for seven years. Thanks for the advice. Just finally, I have access to a compressed air can, just blow that through it do you think? (I haven't got a small enough screwdriver to take off the case).

Compressed air only thru the EXHAUST port. Vacuum only thru the INTAKE port. Or the bunnies won't come out. Jack E/NJ
