E drive slow on G3-605

My E internal data drive has slowed to a crawl. Chkdsk does not help. I’d like to reformat it. (after moving the few programs on it to an external drive (mainly games, uninstall then re-install on external)).

My questions are:
- Is E essential to computer operation? File explorer doesn’t show system files. I don’t care for data drives anymore that are not hot-swappable/external
- I’d like to disable the E drive prior to reformatting to ensure the computer boots up. What is the procedure to do it? I intend to run the computer without E and if it works fine, I might even leave it this way
- If that doesn’t help, I’d like to reformat from CMD in safe mode. What is the command?

Thanks!

Update: Opened the computer, unplugged the drive, restarted. Came up lightning fast, everything working like a well-vacuumed machine.
