The hinge on the right side of my wife's ACER laptop has malfunctioned and caused the screen to begin to separate.  What is the best way to fix this?  The laptop is about 1 year old.

If > Within warranty: It is best to send it for repair, they will fix this for you as your warranty covers the hinge problem.
If < out of warranty: Still send it for repair and get the issue sorted out, a broken hinge is definitely a bad symbol and further damage to the hinge will cause the screen to lose liquid crystals or perhaps it will create air bubbles.

Use duct tape to help prevent further damage for now. Then just take it over the bridge to the GeekSquad and let them take a look at it for an estimate. https://stores.bestbuy.com/nc/morehead-city/5171-us-highway-70-w-1451/geeksquad.html    Any ACER out-of-warranty repair will probably cost as much as a refurbished unit and take a lot longer. I had one which the hinge failed after four months. I liked the laptop other than the hinge so I bought another with a new hinge design and a basic square trade policy. Four months later the right hinge failed again. I called up Acer for their 1 year warranty. Turns out they won't honor it. They said even though the hinge failed, they would not cover it. They said that even though it only broke from the inside, that can only happen from misuse. That was obviously false but I wasn't worried because I bought a square trade standard plan which cover non-accidents including mechanical/electronic failures. So I decided to use my Square Trade warranty. They said that failed hinges aren't mechanical failures and refused to cover it. I asked how hinges aren't mechanical only for the to change topics or why why Acer wont cover them. They also said if Acer won't cover it, then neither will they. So now I'm the proud owner of two failed Acer laptops within a year and two fake warranties. Now as of this week the left hinge is failing. Eventually after an hour on the phone with square trade, they wouldn't honor the warranty but conveniently could refund my policy. I took the refund since the policy was apparently a scam product anyway. Any ideas on how to get Acer to honor the warranty?

The warranty protects BOTH the consumer and the manufacturer. This is not a matter of "not honoring the warranty", as the warranty DOES NOT cover misuse or accidental damage. If the Service department has reviewed the case and deemed it accidental damage or misuse, it is not covered and that is honoring the warranty. A lot of R&D and extended testing is done on these hinges. Thousands of repetitious openings, from various angles, etc. It is not a careless design, but it is also not so robust it can be used without care.

The vast majority of laptops survive their warranty period unscathed with no mentionable problems. The ones that don't get brought to light here on the forums, more often than not. This is a very small fraction of units, with the only varying factor being the environment the laptop was used in, and the manner in which it was used. Given this, it is not accurate to say the hinge has a 'design flaw'. Acer reviews the units under warranty because it is possible, but unlikely, some assembly process was performed incorrectly or perhaps a materials failure (hardness of metal, weak weld, etc). These types of problems are usually immediately present, and do not happen months or years after purchase. These cases are so rare, they are practically non-existent thanks to good quality control at the factory.

That's my take! I've owned nearly a dozen laptops and have experienced hinge failure on ONE, after nearly 5 years of use. I have however seen dozens of laptops with hinge failure (at work) and it's unfortunately nearly always caused by "misuse or accidental damage".

Sorry. You are posting to a users help group not ACER customer service. Laptop hinges of any consumer brand are under tremendous stress from opening and closing the lid too much. Industrial laptops with ruggedized metal frames costing much more than typical consumer products should be used if you need to open and close the lid so often. Jack E/NJ

Acer hinges are just *****, everyone knows this.  Bought an Acer once, never again for me.  Took it to a repair shop and they just said that the hinges on Acer always break.  Unbelievable that they haven't fixed the problem since this has been known for many years.

    Hi Laptopuser2,

I'm sorry to hear that you're running into hinge issues. I can certainly understand the frustration, however, I can assure you that a far larger portion of Acer laptops do not experience this. A lot of research and development go into the hinge design of our products to minimize any issues. Hinges have been failing on clam-shell notebooks for as long as they've been built, and that's not just related to Acer, a quick google search replacing Acer for another manufacture is sure to produce the same or similar results. Unfortunately, the hinge is the weak point in a folding process that also has to be a hollow enough to allow for wires to pass through and not wrinkle them. They take all the stress created when opening the device, but it also has to be capable of moving to allow anyone (think children) to open it.

I have sent you a PM asking for more information to better assist you.

    Thank you,

    Acer-Manny

    Hi Acer-Manny

The problem is that the design of the hinges is flawed and has to be redesigned and it is amazing that Acer hasn't done that already after all those years.  Here is a thing.  If you design an object that has to be opened and closed occasionally, you make sure that can be done without the object falling apart within a few months or years.  That is not a difficult task but Acer has failed miserably in that area.

Do a quick google search and you will find laptop brands that don't have that particular problem.

Regarding the PM you sent me, the laptop is long gone (2014) and I'm just amazed that you haven't solved that trivial problem yet.  Makes you wander :astonished:

P.s.   I'm typing this message on an ASUS, have you seen the hinges on them?  Might give you an idea of how to solve the issue and be more competitive in the market.

    Best wishes and thank you,
    XXXX
