hi I have a acer sf314-52-581r with a 256gb ssd can I add a second m.2 ssd . I spoke to acer they said yes a m.2  sata ssd I opened up laptop the ssd fitted is a nvme ssd and the spare slot looks like a nvme with the fitting for a nvme and not a sata ssd as the fitting is different tried a nvme m.2 ssd but not recognised and checked bios to see if I needed to switch on second bay, also went into search format to search for drive and nothing shows. has anyone got any ideas. thanks in advance.

Thanks for that will give it a go it was just that the main drive is a 256gb nvme so assumed the second slot would be the same.

Misunderstanding here. Both slots m.2 should be the same. And they both should be able to work with either an m.2 SATA SSD or an m.2 nVME SSD. BUT m.2 nVME cardss are often touchier than m.2 SATA cards. If you get exactly the same 256GB m.2 nVME you got now, it might work in the second slot. m.2 nVME cards can be faster than m.2 SATA cards but only if they're in a compatible m.2 nVME-capable slot. If an m.2 nVME card is in an m.2 SATA-only slot, they're only as fast as an m.2 SATA card when they're recognized, which often they aren't as you've discovered. Jack E/NJ

m.2 sata SSD slots should, but often don't, work with the newer m.2 nVME SSD cards. Usually safer to go with an m.2 SATA SSD card in both slots. m.2 SATA slots and m.2 nVME/PCIe look virtually identical. Jack E/NJ

Hi just to let you know a 256gb m.2 sata did the job the 256gb nvme was faulty so could not say if this would work or not in the second slot.
