Aspire AS-5742 suddenly switches off part way through installing Windows 10 1803 update

I have an Aspire AS-5741 which was working fine on Windows 10 until this week.  Windows update keeps trying to install the 1803 update.  It downloads it and then immediately starts installing (even during my set working hours).  It gets to about 25% installed and then the machine suddenly switches off completely and doesn't re-boot.  When I switch on manually it starts the whole process again.  I have tried going straight into airplane mode when I switch on to prevent it re-downloading but it still tries to install the update it has already downloaded and switches off again when 25% installed.  I have also tried clearing out the downloaded file so it can't be installed but as soon as I connect to the internet it downloads another copy and the whole cycle starts again.  Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

To prevent windows update from installing automatically, follow this step:
You can set your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection as metered, which limits how the OS access and uses an internet connection, and when enabled, updates won’t download automatically to your PC.
If you want to set a wireless network connection as metered, do the following:
Open Settings > Click on Network & Internet >Click on Wi-Fi >Click on the Wi-Fi connection to access its settings.
Turn on the Set as metered connection toggle switch to enable and restrict background data usage.
    >>Do the same for Ethernet connection.

    >>If you want to update, try using the Update Assistant.
Clcik on the link below and click Update Now.

I would recommend that you should consider installing this after a month or two when more update packs are released stabilizing new windows update further.
