Ok, just in case anybody actually reads this stuff, here was my solution (provided in phone call to Acer):

System was never turned off, so:

    1) unplug power from computer.

    2) Press power button for 10 seconds to turn off computer.

    3) turn laptop over and locate the small hole on the right side. There is an imprint of a small paperclip next to this small hole.

    4) Press this button for 1 minute with a small paperclip.

    5) return computer to an operating position, plug power cord back in, and hold power button for 10 seconds.

The system then allowed me to log in, and the Windows update continued for the next 5 minutes or so.
