hello,
i have been googling but please could someone explain to me - as if you were explaining to a five year old - what i need to do in this situation:
my laptop froze up and died. when i turn it back on there’s just a large lock icon. pressing f2 gives:
‘default boot device missing or boot failed
insert recovery media and hit any key
then select boot manager..’
pressing okay then takes me around in a circle as there are no options..
what do i do? what is recovery media?
thank you very much,
emily

@emilyemily >>>as if you were explaining to a five year old>>>what do i do? what is recovery media?>>>

    (1) First, you must tell us what full ACER model number you have if possible.

    (2) Recovery media means either a CD/DVD disc or a USB thumbdrive with which you can re-install the original ACER factory-installed Windows ***if*** the original hard drive isn't dead. This recovery media may be available from the ACER store for a nominal fee if needed.

    (3) However, if the original hard drive is only sick---and not dead yet---we may have a chance of curing it even without this recovery media.

    (4) But first, you must respond to  # 1 above.

    hi jack,
thank you so much for the reply.
it says ‘E5-511 series’ on the bottom; or ‘E5-511-P5JQ’?

OK. Now we're gonna try to find out if the HDD is sick or dead. So---

    (1) Press & hold the power button for at least 5 seconds till the machine is completely shut off.
    (2) Turn the machine back on and ***immediately*** start tapping the F2 key to try to get into what's called the BIOS menu. It should look like the 2 images below.
    (3) Under the BIOS Information tab, do you see a description of the hard drive similar to the red oval in the first image?
    (4) If yes, move on to the Main tab, and make sure the F12 boot menu and D2D recovery options are both enabled.
    (5) Then press the F10 key to save settings and exit the BIOS menu.
    (6) Press and hold the power button again for 5 seconds till the machine completely shuts off again.
    (7) Turn the machine back on and ***immediately*** press and hold the ALT key while tapping the F10 key. An ACER recovery screen should appear if the hard drive is well enough to cure itself. You can try to follow the recovery screen instructions to re-set the machine to a factory fresh state. Or you can try to save your personal files and re-set the machine to an 'almost' factory-fresh state.

thanks so much; i definitely didn’t expect that level of help! all the above steps work but the ‘refresh’ option isn’t working and i really want to avoid resetting it if at all possible. should i contact acer for the recovery media?

No. The recovery media only gives you virtually the same options as the ALT+F10 procedure as shown in the video below.
    (1)  Is the hard drive in the first BIOS image above fully described on your system? It may not be a WD drive (Western Digital) but could be another manufacturer.
    (2) Did the refresh give you any error message?

    oh.
    1) yes i think so. all those three lines of text are there.
    2) when i click through it’s troubleshoot > refresh your pc > then i have to select windows 10 > please wait.. ‘there was a problem with refreshing your pc. no changes were made.

No photo came thru. But assuming the BIOS did detect and identify the hard drive OK, the refresh error is serious because it suggests that a on section of your hard drive has been damaged or corrupted. Re-do the ALT+F10 but click on Advanced Options and try to follow one of the options for repairing the PC, whichever options seems to be most straightforward to you. Jack E/NJ

i’ve done the alt+f10 multiple times and gone into every option. i guess it’s just not going to happen - it’s not the laptop i’m concerned about; it’s photos, and hours of work. how annoying.
thanks so much for your help.

The only other option to try to recover the photos and work, is to physically remove the hard drive and connect it with a USB hard drive adapter cable (very inexpensive) to the USB port of a working Windows machine. If the section of the drive with the photos and work is still good, these files can be copied to the other machine. Once copied, you can then try the full ALT+F10 factory reset to see if the drive can be repaired. If not, newer, faster replacement hard drives are quite inexpensive these days. Jack E/NJ

    Hi JackE,

hoping you could help me as well please? I am having the same issue as Emily, except the red circle above has no information in it for HDD model name or HDD Serial number. What does this mean, please?

    It’s an Aspire ES1-533 series.

It probaly means the HDD needs to be reseated to the mainboard connector a few times to clean its contacts. Remove the charger and remove 2 screws from the base door and 4 screws from the HDD holder to lift and pull it out.  Then push it back in. Repeat this operation a half dozen of so times. Then button it back up and try to turn it on  again. Jack E/NJ
