Acer E17 E5-774G-74EB, 18 months old. Laptop is permanently plugged in, but recently has started to spontaneously switch to battery mode after a) sleep or b) start-up. On both a and b laptop is plugged in. Removing and reinserting AC cable in mains then restores plugged-in mode. Changed mains socket, but problem persists. Could AC cable and/or jack have become defective, or any ideas what could be problem? Laptop fully up to date. Thanks!

Hi,
Try reinstalling Microsoft ACPI-compliant control method battery driver, go to Device manager, expand Batteries, highlight and right click Microsoft ACPI-compliant control method battery, click Properties, uninstall the driver in Driver tab, reboot and let Windows install the driver.

Hi,
You have the original BIOS, if you are confident could try updating to the latest version of BIOS, you have to update them in this order, 1.12, 1.18, 1.23, 1.25 and finally 1.27.
https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/support-product/6784?b=1
Don't do all the updates at once, I always update one and use the laptop for a while then try the next update.
You need to be cautious while updating BIOS, so please take these precautions to be safe.
1.Make sure the Battery is fully charged.
2.Keep the AC adapter always connected during the process.
3.Uninstall any third party AV programs.
4.Close all opened programs and applications.
5.Disconnect any USB sticks, Printers, Headphones etc.
6.Download the BIOS from Acer support site to a convenient place( Desktop)
7. Extract the file by right clicking zip file and selecting "Extract here".
8.Open the extracted folder, right click .exe file and select "Run As admin".
9. Click OK for any prompts and when the process starts move away fro the laptop.
10.During the process don't touch any buttons or switch off the laptop.
If you are in doubt, please get it done by a professional at a local Repair shop, HTH.
