The battery has not held much charge for a year or two now so I have been using the laptop plugged into the mains. The power failed during use yesterday. I have checked all connections and there is a power light on the adaptor. I have followed instructions on the Acer website to remove the battery and hold down power button for 30 secs but no joy. The laptop is completely dead plugged into mains with or without battery the power button does not light up. I assume the laptop should still power up even if the battery is not in place or is completely dead? Any suggestions would be appreciated before I look for a local repair company or a replacement.

The easy option to isolate the issue is by swapping the charger for another, or trying this charger on another device.

You can also check the adapter using a multimeter. Plug in the adapter. Wrigle the cable and check the adapter. If you see voltage or amperage that jumps around from high to low a high, the issue could be with the charger. Make sure it's putting out the rated voltage.

The laptop should working fine even if the battery is not inserted.

Hello Shanjari, thank you for your response. I have managed to track down another cable from a friend but this did not solve the problem. I also tried my adapter & cable on their laptop which worked fine, so I can eliminate the adapter and cable as the cause of the problem. I will now look for a local repair company to see if replacing the power unit in the laptop is a simple operation. Thanks again.

Does the charger's plug have a center hole? If yes, check inside the laptop's jack to make sure the central pin is straight and not bent toward the side. Jack E/NJ
