Acer Laptop Aspire 5 A517-51G-54GK: looking for HDD cable and bracket

I broke my laptop recently, so I bought the Acer Laptop Aspire 5 A517-51G-54GK from Newegg.  Even though it only has a smallish SSD, I read that I could install a HDD if I so chose.  I harvested the 1TB HDD from my old laptop, and I've got it in a shell for now.  (Treating it like an external hard drive.)

So.  Where do I get those parts?  I know I'm not the only one with this problem.

    Hi,
You could contact Acer Support in US, they might send you the required kit.

I did.  No dice.  Searched the shop, talked to Live chat, who said that they didn't have the parts at all, which is a patent lie, since other customers acquired the parts they needed to make the upgrade somehow.

Are there some Acer reps on here?  I saw a few names being tossed around to people with a similar problem to mine.

I was told earlier today via livechat that the parts I needed would be in the chassis, but they aren't.  I'm contacting livechat again to see if I can get the parts this time.

In the meantime, I took pictures of my laptop's internals.  I'm hoping someone can instruct me on where to attach the cable to the motherboard when I can acquire the parts I need.

    Hi,
The connector is just below the WiFi card, B in my snip below and you may have to remove the mylar, it is under the antenna cables.

A= Speaker cable;  C= DC in cable;   B= HDD cable.

    I see... thank you, Brummy!

Now I just hope I can get the kit soon.   :'(

If I install stuff on the HDD via USB, will I still be able to use the software the same way when I eventually hook it directly to the MOBO?  I've currently got the HDD in an external caddy.

    Hi,
No problem, you can use the external HDD for data storage, you may not be able to run any software from it.

Well, I was hoping to install Microsoft Office.  You think I should wait till it's sitting internal?

Why don't you install the Office in current C drive? Normally, you should install the OS and main Applications in the main drive and use the additional HDD for extra storage.

The installed drive is a 256GB SSD.  I would like to reserve the SSD space for software that warrants it.  Say, multimedia programs, graphics editors, dev tools, etc.  Office runs just fine on a normal HDD.

To be clear, I have a hard drive- that I want to install inside the laptop- currently kept in an external caddy, since I don't have what I need to install it into the laptop.  I'm wondering if software I install on this one hard drive- while it's external- will still work once I install the drive internally.

I don't think so, when you install the Office it will be installed in the main drive where your OS resides.

    Dear Manny,

a customer has a notebook from the same series with the same design and now I also need a HDD kit (bracket and cable) for this to add an HDD, can you give me the part number or publish it here in this thread, so others can find it too?

    kind regards
