Whenever my laptop goes to sleep or after the lid has been closed, there will be no sound coming out of the speakers, even if headphones are plugged in. Please help.

Could you please post the full model number of your laptop?
Does this happen after windows 10 update?

I would suggest you to run the audio troubleshooter after waking up the computer from sleep mode and check if it helps.

Press Windows key + W to search Settings.
Type “Troubleshoot” without quotes and click on Troubleshooting.
In the new window, click Hardware and Sound.
In the list of options, click on Playing audio.
Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.

Try to uninstall and re-install the sound drive and check if it helps.
Follow the steps to uninstall the sound drive:
Press Windows Key + X and then click Device Manger.
    Search for sound drive.
Right click the sound drive and click uninstall.
Follow the prompt and restart the computer and the drivers would be restored automatically.

Let us know the status of the issue. We will be glad to assist u further.

Unfortunately, the solutions provided did not work for me. The model is TravelMate P259-G2-M.
I've only recently purchased this laptop and it came with Windows 10.
Please assist me in this, thank you!

Open Control Panel. Search "restore point". Click on 'restore system and files from a restore point'. Check if an automatic Win10 update restore point was created around the time that you first noticed the audio problem. Jack E/NJ
