resurrect dead Aspire?

I was using my Aspire E5-575-5394 laptop with the charger plugged in when there was a sudden loud click and a black screen. I then read in the manual that battery damage could result if the charger is used when the battery is already full, so perhaps that was the cause.

My analog multimeter can’t detect any voltage in the battery after removal, but the charger appears undamaged. It reads 20 DCV right through the port and wire harness, directly to the leads into the motherboard.

So my conclusion is that the motherboard must have power, but there’s zero action from the power button on the keyboard: no fan, no lights, no beeps, nada.

I’m fine with getting a new battery, but shouldn’t it boot and run normally with only the charger for power? Is there a fuse to replace or circuit breaker to reset before the system will function again? All knowledgeable advice is most welcome--thanks in advance!
