My ACER LCD monitor won`t start, there is no sign of power whatsoever.Am I using the wrong kind of adaptor? The plug-in says DC in, nothing else. Does it even matter?

It does matter a great deal, and putting the wrong adapter in could fry the monitor. What model do you have? What voltage and averages is shown for the output on the power supply you tried?

The below mention are the specification of the adapter for this monitor
    input (AC): 100-240V 50-60H
    Output is (DC): 19V 3.42A

The model is S241HL . The adapters were first the one I thought to be the original, output: 12V ------------ 1A   12W. It says AC adapter on it, which probably isn't a good sign.... The second says output:5,5V ----1A. And it says AC/DC ADAPTER.... Have I unwittingly killed my monitor?

Thx! I thought I had looked every possible place so that one of the located adapters had to be the correct one or that I had somehow managed to throw it away together with other derelict pieces of electrical equipment. After writing here I went through the bag containing my second hand purchased, but not yet assembled WiiU. The bag seemed to contain one adapter too many... And it also seemed to have the specifications mentioned in your response above... So, thx again! My Acer monitor is now up and running, 1 1/2 years after I purchased it. 😊😊🐯

And you were living right! The 5.5V output from the wrong supply wasn't high enough to damage anything. :)
