The laptop is Aspire 1-431. I have been trying and reading all over the internet for 2 hours now. I have an SD card and a USB flash card stuck in the ports and still am unable to get past the "unable to update, need clean up" error message. What should I do?

PS I virtually have noting extra installed/stored on the laptop. Funny that I can't update an "almost clean" laptop.

Don't get me started. Sounds like you have a 32GB flash drive.

First to "clean up" you need to go to File Explorer and right click on the C: drive, the select "properties. Click on Disk Cleanup for the first stage. When that comes back click on Clean up system files .This will take a few minutes. When that come back click on anything (will need to scroll) over 10MB. Most likely something will be a few GB.

Also is your SD card formatted NTFS ?

By being ruthless about removing bloat, allowing compression, disabling hibernation, and shrinking the page file to 500MB it is possible to free 13-14GB on C: on a 32GB machine so it can be done but is not a trivial exercise. As delivered "abandon all hope".
