USB 3.0 Drive on Aspire VX 15 Doesn't Recognize as 3.0

I connected my external hard drive to the USB 2.0 port *once*, and ever since it will only recognize as a USB 2.0 device, even when I connect it to one of the USB 3.0 ports. Because of this, the transfer rates are *very* slow. I've tried everything I can think of - switching ports, switching cords, uninstall the drivers, all manner of rebooting in combination with these. Nothing works. What can I do?

    OK, i was just screwing around in device manager, and i don't know how, but it's working like normal again. ah well. EDIT: OK NEVER MIND

    OK, wait, nevermind. The cord came slightly loose and now it's back to screwing up. Sigh. I think it might be a problems with the cord itself? I just ordered a new one, we'll see.
