Brand new Acer Spin 5, bought for my wife for Christmas, and so far it's been a headache.

The touchpad doesn't click.. at all.  I've got it to work once or twice but it just stops working any time quickly after that... and pressing so hard on the bottom corner to select something feels like you're going to break it.  I want to tap to open something, I have it selected in the control panel, but it doesn't work.  When I selected the sensitivity to highly sensitive, it worked!!  For a minute.  Then it doesn't work.
Right from the get-go, even in the beginning stages when we were setting up the accouont name etc, it wouldn't click the buttons... I had to tab and enter.

Is it broken?

Oh, and to solve this, we went out and bought a USB mouse.  I plug that in, let the drivers install, and it just constantly clicks, won't stop, forever clicking... I tried another usb mouse, same problem.

Is this laptop a dud?  I just spent a thousand dollars on a laptop that appears to be broken...

  • Hi,
Could you please post the model of your laptop, remove the USB mouse, go to Acer support site and download the Touchpad driver, extract it and save it in Desktop, go to BIOS settings, go to Main tab and switch Touchpad to Basic mode, save and exit.
Install the Touchpad driver saved in Desktop, then go back to BIOS and switch Touchpad mode to Advanced.
To find out the make of your Touchpad, go to device manager, expand Mice and other pointing devices ,highlight and right click HID Compliant Touchpad, go to Properties, go to Details tab, select Hardware IDs in the dropdown menu, if you see SYNA you need Synaptics driver, if it's Elan, you need Elantech driver.

So it has the Elantec touchpad... there are no touchpad drivers available from Acer that I can see, only a fingerprint driver.  I even tried that one but it did nothing.

I go into BIOS, main tab, there is no options for the touchpad at all....

Don't mess around. Return it to the store or vendor for a refund or replacement pronto. Jack E/NJ

Looking that way... I went into device manager and updated the driver.. and the touchpad worked!!!  Then I restarted the computer.. and it doesn't work again!!

Is this repeatable? If yes, try to note driver version after re-starting. Thanks. Jack E/NJ
