How to use external monitor without getting spurious "missing operating system" error.

I plugged in an external monitor to my Acer Aspire TimelineX 5820T running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I see that right-clicking spare area on screen leads to a facility for both external monitor and attached screen to be used. At first there was no picture on the external monitor but on rebooting the message "Missing operating system" came up on it. So I unplugged the monitor and rebooted. Now I had a blank screen except "Missing operating system" on the attached screen (part of the laptop computer). I booted into BIOS but could not make head nor tail of what I was seeing. I looked for the Windows 7 CD which of course in this kind of situation one can never find. In desperation I rebooted and Windows came up, so the operating system was not missing at all. Can an external monitor be used with this laptop, so that one can have a different picture on each monitor? If so, what is the procedure? If not, what is the purpose of the socket into which monitors can be plugged?
