No option for extended service plans on Travelmates?

Here comes the long story, I broke the screen on my little net book. it had a 9 inch screen. I took the screen from the 11 inch acer that the MB was dead on and "attached" it to the netbook. it mostly works. (9 inch display on the 11 inch screen) however I no longer have the ability to extend the desktop. the newest driver is installed but the option to extend is not even there, just clone. would there be another driver?

I did not see anything in the bios.

What model # for your little netbook with a 9" screen? What model # for your dead 11" Acer?  What latest graphics driver did you try to install which primarily drives the graphics card, not the screen. Are you looking for an option to extend a service plan on a Travelmate? What model # Travelmate? Or are you also looking for an option to extend the desktop so it fills the  11" screen? Jack E/NJ

I have no idea how that subject line got there. should I just get this deleted and start over?

the netbook is an aspire one D270 which had I guess a 10 inch screen.

the dead MB was an aspire D721

I do not have a travelmate.

What graphics driver did you try to install? The 270 has an Intel adapter. The 721 has an AMD adapter. Jack E/NJ

Assuming it's still running the original factory-installed Win7, does Device Manager show ***any*** driver issues with ***any*** device? Jack E/NJ

it is not running factory windows but it is running a legit copy of windows 7 starter.

device manager had issue with ethernet card and pci device.

I just installed the ethernet driver and chip set driver from acer and that seemed to take care of those issues. Yes I rebooted several times.

I am still not able to extend the desktop to the external monitor only clone.

What do you mean by extend the desktop to the external monitor? If you mean HDMIing out to a TV, try turning the TV on with the Fn+F5 or Fn+F6 toggle key combos.  What do you mean by 'clone'? Jack E/NJ

    right click>graphics properties>multiple displays>display mode

in there you should have the ability to select/ one screen /clone or extend. at the moment I have not tried anything but the vga monitor. I have not tried the hdmi port to see if it even works.

I want to be able to open programs and slide the to the other screen like watch a security screen on one monitor and type in a word doc on the other. I am postive that I was able to do that with this computer before the screen broke and before the HD crash and windows reinstall

I have tested the hdmi output and it is the same.

And I'm guessing the generic Win7 installation, not the busted screen, is likely causing the issue assuming the BIOS isn't controlling the video hotkey combos. You ***might*** still be able to get the original ACER-specific Win7 installation USB stick based on the machine's SNID at nominal cost by going to store.acer.com. Choose US or CA then click on 'eRecovery' in the upper right hand corner. Jack E/NJ

I am going to have to say no to that. I can't see the OS having anything to do with the video driver. I am going to have to say it is a cripled intel driver from acer.

and when I did put the serial number in the site comes back with wanting to send me a CD for 20 bucks for a netbook that dosen't have an optical drive.

thanks for the help going to pass now might install linux or something.

I suggested the the SNID-specific Win7 version because it has the original factory-shipped video driver and associated software that made your particular D270's internal & external videos function with the ACER-flavored keyboard toggles.  If the external screens still don't work with this ACER Win7 version, then either the graphics hardware has developed an issue or its external outputs are disabled with the 721 screen attached. If you haven't done so already, you might wanna try to HDMI or VGA out without the 721 screen attached to test the latter possibility. BTW, USB media might also be available from the eRecovery site. If not, a bootable installation stick can easily be made from the installation DVDs on another machine. Jack E/NJ

I may not have been clear as to what is happening. I can have either or both screens hold content IE: a word doc but it is the same document. I can not open a youtube video on the laptop screen and a word doc on the monitor. and to me that is the point of dual monitors.

so the driver allows me to have laptop or monitor on and yes the F5 and F6 keys work.

or I can make BOTH screens look the same.

what I can not do is make them contain different content.

I will try to re-seat the ribbon cable again but I may have to just live with it.

google tells me that all intel chips can handle extending the desktop to a second screen to allow more space to open apps.

If this is the case, what happens if youtube & word are made desktop windows, then simply drag the youtube window toward one screen and the word window toward the other screen? Jack E/NJ

Well seeing as it just a duplicate of the SAME desktop I get the same document and same YouTube video on 2 screens! At times yes I want that but more often I want "different" desktop screens so I can have the document full screen on one and the video full screen on the other. I still haven't had time to pull it apart to see if maybe the ribbon cable is not in right.

Do you mean if you drag a smallish Word window (meaning not maximised) toward the other screen, it still shows up in its entirety on both screens? Jack E/NJ

it is feeding both screens the same info so if I was on the laptop screen with a doc and I try to drag it to the monitor screen the mouse moves the same amount on both screens at the same time. one action on two screens.

great if I want to show someone everything I am doing on laptop and they are across the desk. but what if I want to do a powerpoint slide show and have the slides only come up on the monitor and the slides with my notes are on the laptop.

this is when you need the extend option in the driver.

Do the multi-display options change when you change the resolution? Jack E/NJ
