Acer Aspire 5332 screen very dark and faint

Hi.

I''ve got an Acer Aspire 5332 and the screen is very dark and faint. If I boot up, the initial text is vlear, and when pressing [F2] to get into cmos bios setup, it's perfectly clear as normal.

However booting into windows, well linux mint now as the hard disk failed, the screen goes into the dark mode. However attaching an external monitor and everything is fine on that monitor, just the lcd screen dark. There is an image of the display in the darkness as outlines of windows can be seen.

I've replaced the inverter, but the same.

I'm not aware of any lid switch - or if it has actually got one.

If it was the backlight or the lcd panel itself, then the bios setup screen I assume would also not show up.

I've used the brightness Fn control, and the various Fn screen controls etc, but nothing.

It seems that just it just can't light up "graphics" mode.

Is it possibly the motherboard or built in graphics chip or similar that has gone faulty ?

Thanks for any extra information.

The video is fine when in BIOS, but as soon as an OS loads, the screen goes "faint" or "dark".

Video being ok in BIOS would indicate that there is not an issue with the video card or the LCD.  It sounds very much like a driver support issue.

I can only suggest reloading the factory OS on the system and seeing if that works properly.

Thanks very much for your help.

After reading your reply, I searched more on the display issue and found some answers to amend the "grub" boot file and also the system monitor settings to set the display to 0% brightness rather than 100%! It seems like the system (Linux Mint) is showing the reverse of what it should be.

The machine is now working perfectly.
