Firstly, I need to say that I am partially sighted so  things can be a little difficult for me to read and find. Since a big Windows 10 update late last year, my sounds have not worked.

I have not been unduly worried as I play my music through bluetooth speakers and can use my monitor speakers for other things.

However, I have moved my computer and want to attach a good set of speakers to it.

My Realtek and Nvidia devices report that they are working.

How can I tell if the soundcard needs replacing if they are returning that they are working when clearly they are not.

How and where do I access the soundcard and where could I get one.

are the external speakers connected to the correct output jack in the back of the PC?

also check that Realtek is the default device:

right click the speaker icon near clock and date

    click on playback devices

click on Speakers (Realtek) then click on set default on the button above.

    Thank you.

Yes, I clicked on to REALTEK as the playback device and yes, the jack is in correctly.

Before this major ipdate, I had a set of Harman Kardon speakers and these worked perfectly but were some years old. It was after the major ipdate of windows 10 that, suffenly, I couldn't get any sound from my speakers. I wasn't too bothered as I just connected my bluetooth speakers but now I need to connect new speakers.

I can only think that it is a soundcard issue as I get sound through the monitor speakers but I don't know how to check if this is the case, nor do I know how to change it. I want to see if it IS the soundcard first before going to any unnecessary expense.

if you are getting sound from the monitor speakers and the monitor is connect using and HDMI cable, the Realtek is not set as  default Playback device (must have a green tick icon over it).

    Thank you again.

In the speaker box, I have several choices as I have bluetooth speakers, headphones etc that I can choose from. I just highlight where I want the sound to come from.

In Audio manager, both my monitor speakers AND Realtek have the green tick. When I take the tick off the monitor speakers, leaving only Realtek ticked, I still get no sound.

It's all very odd as this happened just before Christmas 2016, when Windows 10 did a massive update. Updates since then have not rectified it.

    ok, let's try this:

    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#High Definition Audio Codecs

tick on Accept and then next button, download the 64 bit windows 10 drivers version and then install it.

Hello again and thank you for the suggestion.

I have already done this following the instructions to uninstall and re-install.

Nothing has helped. I have spent all week trying various things and although I can hear a tiny bit of music from the speakers now, the volume is so low you can't even make out what's playing!!

I have gone through everything to increase the volume but nothing seems to help.

Going on to various blogs, it seems that many Windows 10 users have experienced this problem following updates.

All Microsoft is advising is, as you have here, unistalling and reinstalling the Realtek driver.

Although this has worked for some, for myself and others it hasn't made any difference and the problem still persists.

    Thank you anyway.

I'm not even sure that buying and getting someone to insert a new sound card will make any difference so I don't want to go to the expense.
