Machine frequently goes to black screen; sometimes just shuts off and other times it sounds like something is spinning up or increasing in speed - not sure if it's a fan or possibly the HDD. Does not respond in any way other than to shut off power and restart. Anyone else experiencing this?

try updating the nvidia driver first:

then, try another HDMI cable too if possible.

Installed the new NVIDIA drivers. I will give it some time to see how it goes and respond later.

Had another incident this morning. Machine unexpectedly seemed to completely shut down: screen went black, lighted keyboard shut off, red V light on front of machine went off, then red V light came back on and there was again what sounded like something spinning up or increasing in speed. At this point the machine does not respond to any keyboard or mouse input or the on/off button and the only option is to shut off power and restart. I installed the new NVIDIA drivers but did not try another HDMI cable because I'm not sure this is related to any display problem. How would that account for the "increasing speed" sound? It sounds like the HDD, a fan, or the optical drive is spinning up. BTW, I also installed new drivers for the optical drive a few days ago because that stopped working, but with the new drivers it is ok now. Also forgot to mention that I installed an additional Sandisk SDD when I first started up the machine about two weeks ago. But it's that "speeding up" sound it makes that is the most perplexing thing here.

the increasing spinning sound is the CPU fan.

    download this tool, whocrashed:
    http://www.resplendence.com/download/whocrashedSetup.exe

before running it, browse to C:\windows\minidump
delete all files apart the first 2-3 files (newest)
then install whocrashed and run it
    click on Analyze
    report here the result.

Did not find a \minidump folder under windows, but ran the whocrashed program and got these results:

    Conclusion

Crash dumps are enabled but no valid crash dumps have been found. In case you are experiencing system crashes, it may be that crash dumps are prevented from being written out. Check out the following article for possible causes: If crash dumps are not written out.
