I can not get to 'safe mode'. found  RECOVERY DISC download on line with another laptop but trying to re-establish windows 8 it asks for microsoft product key .... i did not get one when purchased laptop as it was pre-installed....how do i find out my product to continue with the recovery ?

Is there any way I can restore without it ?

Does Acer have a list of product keys that match the serial numbers of the E5's ??

Really need my laptop so any help greatly appreciated.....thanks ....Ronnie

you can't skip the product key request?

by the way, once at windows language selection, press shift+F10 to open a command prompt, then type:

    wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

this will output your product key

if the product key is not recognised, sometimes happens with OEM product key, you can buy an original Acer recovery media:

    Acer recovery media
    US:
    https://store.acer.com/en-us/extended/recovery/

    Canada:
    https://store.acer.com/en-ca/extended/recovery/

if you are outside the US and Canada, you must call/email your regional Acer support service:

    Hi and thanks IronFly.....

I got to the 'language screen' did shift f10 and got a cmd screen.

    cursor was flashing on X:\Sources>

    I typed in your command

    wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductkey

Not a full techie - i did it with spaces and uppercase and got ERROR: Description  = Not found

Does this mean it is not available to view ? or have I typed in wrong ?

The recovery disc I downloaded does let me have some functions - I can get to 'repair your computer' and a Windows screen that gives options of - Continue / Use a device / Troubleshoot / Turn off your PC.

Under Troubleshoot I then get - Refresh your PC ( this won't work as system does not recognise the disc ) / Reset your PC ( not going to do that as it loses all my files ) / Advanced options -

Next menu gives me - System Restore ( have tried but says the four points available do not work ) / System Image Recovery ( I don't have an image file ) / Start-up Repair ( this appears to work as it displays Diagnosing your PC and then Attempting repairs but doesn't appear to get any further ) / Command Prompt / UEFI Firmware Settings ( Don't know what this is - so left it alone )....

If you can throw any more light on this ( ONCE AGAIN ) very grateful !...Ronnie

    Thanks again

with "not boot up", what do you mean:

    black screen

    blue screen error

    continuos rebooting

    loading loop

have you checked under BIOS (press F2 at boot) if your HDD is listed under SATA devices or main page?

Original 'will not boot' was - on powering up, just got a black screen and no sounds / movements internally.

I did try F2 and all seemed to be in the right places....that's when I began looking for a way to try and 'safe mode' but the old F8 does not work on W8......the previous message gives an outline of what I can get access to using the recovery disc I got online...without it I was going nowhere....thanks...Ronnie
