My Acer Aspire ES 15 has a black screen with desktop icons barely readabel in the background. I am able to use an external monitor. I have tried restarts with no success.

Well going to make a few assumptions due to a real lack of detail on this. Checked brightness control set to max? Bios updated to current? Guessing this dark screen is in all applications. You say can see faint outlines of icons and external monitor works.

So, we conclude video function normal. Display connector could be loose on back of panel. Display has internal backlight failure. Display ribbon connector is bad. Port on motherboard sending bad power to display.

Easiest check first...if out of warranty proceed otherwise send in for repair. So you going to fix yourself? Remove trim around display starting near top center working toward edges then down sides too bottom. It is held on by just snap clips and removes toward you when facing system in normal use. Once removed 4 philips head screws hold LCD in place. Remove and then lean top edge of display toward you (keyboard) and look down behind it on right side. Should see a 30pin Edp connector held on by tape. Carefully press it on, check to see if loose. Once sure it's on tight lean display back into back plastic and add 2 screws. Power up and test. If ok, shut back down, add other 2 screws and trim back on, you good. Fails, I would replace the LCD display and most likely use a better one than it came with, i.e. Replace and upgrade. While the other parts mentioned can cause the issue the panel would be the most likely culprit.
