Acer Aspire 5742Z-4097 Installed new wiped hard drive.  Purchased (Disk) recovery set from Acer and was told this set would restore my laptop to original factory setting. The disks run and it take approximately 3 hours to install the set of 5. They don't install on the hard drive. Does the H.D. have to be partitioned?  If so it there a link where software can be obtained.  The unit is out of warranty.   What is really obscene is that Acers Techs. say that the disks by themselves  aren't enough they want $129. for a service contract and will help me install the disks remotely.

The recovery disks on some models really want to have the drive cleared of all partitions before they get going. They create all the partitions needed then during the install process. I've never heard of quite your symptoms before though...

    SOLVED

The hard drive was purchased on EBay wiped clean.  The problem the erecovery disks for this computer required a partioned drive. Downloaded free copy of "Partition Wizard" and used it to partition the hard drive. It worked like a dream after that Microsoft update finished the job.

Why couldn't the "ace" techs just tell me this instead of asking for $129.

The sales people at Acer were very helpful they instantly knew what the solution was. It was called "Low level Format Tool"    which I never downloaded. I was afraid it would format my good computer.   http://download.cnet.com/HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool/3001-2094_4-75544788.html
