I have an acer iconia tablet w500. While doing the recovery process the screen didn't turn on.

I wanted to recover my tablet to its initial settings. I started the process described. I plugged the external cd with the recovery disc. I pressed the windows an volume up button and then the power on button. I released the power button and waited for screen to open so I could follow instructions but that never happened. Before any of that the tablet was working perfectly.

Did your external drive have it's own power? There's probably not enough in the tablet to run an external drive.

Thanks for your post. I have connected the external drive to both my desktop computer and the tablet. The disc is running perfectly because I can hear it and I can see the indicator on but the screen is absolutely dead.

The desktop likely has an abundance of power for the external drive. The tablet is probably putting out enough to spin the motor, but not enough to spin the motor and drive the laser both. Try providing it with external power, either through a powered hub or a wall wart to the drive.
