Switch 11V won't start (blank screen)

My son's Switch 11V will no longer start up -- we can push the power button and see the screen's backlight come on, but the screen is completely blank and nothing happens even if we leave it for an hour.

 

My son says that he turned it on and immediately saw a message with a blue background telling him that something needed to be upgraded and not to interrupt after it reboots (this sounds like it could have been Windows 10 updating, perhaps to the "anniversary update"?).   It rebooted and said it was updating, then the screen turned black, and nothing happened -- he left it for a few hours, came back, and the screen was still black.   Since then both he and I have tried turning it on and only get a black screen.

 

When I google the issue, I see a lot of references to "Acer black screen of death" for OTHER Acer laptops -- apparently a common problem with Acers is BIOS corruption.   I am wondering if this is what happened -- or the other possibility is there was an incompatible Windows 10 update that "bricked" the machine somehow.
