    download this tool, whocrashed:
    http://www.resplendence.com/download/whocrashedSetup.exe

before running it, browse to C:\windows\minidump
delete all files apart the first 2-3 files (newest)
then install whocrashed and run it
    click on Analyze
    report here the result.

Hi thanks for getting back to me.

There is nothing in the minidump folder.

I have bluescreen viewer installed and I looked earlier.

I guess my recent clean ups have got rid of it or it did not write.

without an error code is impossible to try to solve your issue.

by the way have a look here, expecially point 2 and 3:

Another dump today with a different name so carried out you advice and installed whocrashed

I do not see an option to attach the dmp file here ? so hae copied/pasted

    Crash dump directory: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump

Crash dumps are enabled on your computer.

On Sun 20/11/2016 14:19:17 your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\112016-45421-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x14A510)
    Bugcheck code: 0x133 (0x1, 0x1E00, 0x0, 0x0)
    Error: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
    file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: The DPC watchdog detected a prolonged run time at an IRQL of DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. This problem might also be caused because of overheating (thermal issue).
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

On Sun 20/11/2016 14:19:17 your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: hal.dll (hal!HalPerformEndOfInterrupt+0x245)
    Bugcheck code: 0x133 (0x1, 0x1E00, 0x0, 0x0)
    Error: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
    file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: Hardware Abstraction Layer DLL
Bug check description: The DPC watchdog detected a prolonged run time at an IRQL of DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. This problem might also be caused because of overheating (thermal issue).
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time.

    Conclusion

2 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. No offending third party drivers have been found. Connsider using WhoCrashed Professional which offers more detailed analysis using symbol resolution. Also configuring your system to produce a full memory dump may help you.

    press windows key logo

    type mdsched

choose if you want to do the memory test (ram) now or after a shutdown, choose extended test and choose 8 pass.

it will take some time to end, report if any error is found.

    Followed your instructions

After 2 hours the scan was still at 0.2% 1/8 completion and stuck at 21% for the duration

Therefore I have carried out the quick 8 pass scan

    laptop started

I briefly got a notification telling me some errors detected then message went as quick as it came.

Where do I fine the results of the 8 pass scan?  my searches have came up with nothing so far

that means you have a memory stick with some errors, need to be replaced.

    Now I am confused

Following the last link and instructions (for vista and w7 )

I open the first 2 info files and it says no errors found.

Try again the extended with just 2 passes.

The extended scan again reaches 21% and stops.

    Will try the middle option

  • IronFlyIronFly ACE Posts: 18,415 Trailblazer
If your laptop has accessible ram modules (opening the ram cover), i would try to run it with just one ram stick and check if it BSOD again, then swap the ram stick and try again.

There seems to be a lot of "me also" threads around the net so perhaps these issues are connected to W10 updates etc
