I was using my aspire 5740G this morning and moved it to another room. I then did something else for about half and hour and when I looked at the screen  there was just the aspire logo and the turning circle. I tired turning it off with cntrl alt del to no avail so turned off with the power button. I waited a few minutes then turned back on. This appeared on the screen:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

PXE-MOF: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.

Operating System not found

There was noise from inside also as if something was turning and turning without doing anything.

Can anyone tell me what these codes mean? Has the disk crashed? Is there anything I can do to find out what happened and/or fix it. If it cannot be fixed how can I recover data? Sadly I did not backup.

Thanks.

press F2 at boot and check if your HDD model/serial is listed under boot menu or in the main page.

if not, your HDD probably is gone.

these strings/code appears when your computer tries to find a bootable device and it can't find one, it simply stops at PXE lan boot mode waiting for a boot signal.
