Graphic card lost memory

I have a very strange display problem on my laptop, Acer ASpire 5920G. I try to summarize the problems:

The graphic adapter is an NVIDIA 8600M GS, with 256MB RAM. During normal operation (internet surfing), the screen went black.
I restarted the laptop, but the screen was completely black, even if I heard the hard disk working, probably starting the OS.
At first I thought of a damaged graphic card, but when I connected an external monitor, it worked normally.
So I decided to upgrade the card drivers. After that, the situation was the following:

Black screen during boot, but Windows Vista was showing, with screen size limited to only 1024x768. In practice, there are two black bands around the monitor, one below the widows desktop, and one to the right. And with my huge surprise, the graphic card is now recognized by the bios as NVIDIA 8400M GS, with only 128 MB ram!
The driver version is 9.18.13.1090, and if I try to downgrade it, I get again the situation of no image at all. Any advice? Would a bios upgrade help?

Thanks

I do not believe that a BIOS would assist in this instance.

It sounds to me like you need to have the video system replaced.

We would suggest contacting technical support in your region for further assistance with this issue.
