I have used the Acer Asprie X1800 with Windows 7 for many years and burned so many DVD/CD discs of the same brand name without any problem. Suddenly it rejects the discs now. Burning from other Acer laptop with Windows 7 as well with same brand name discs and burning software has no problem at all. Do I need DVD firmware/driver update from Acer? Lookng at Acer support website, I don't find any firmware/driver update for DVD drive for this desktop model. Please help to fix this problem. Many thanks.

Unfortunately, there is no firmware available for download for this drive. It is possible the drive has failed. Have you tried another software to burn disks? Have you tried reloading your OS, to see if that resolves your issue?

    Hi there,

Thanks for your reply. I did try different software to burn but the same result. The Ritek and JVC/Taiyo Yuden brand discs that I have used for many years without any problem with this drive now are rejected. The drive does work with different brand like memorex. Bad thing is I still have lots of blank Rited and JVC/Taiyo Yuden dicsc and they are printable. I can burn with these 2 brand with my laptop without any problem, but it is slower. To reload OS, hmmm, any easy way? Since I have many software installed and reloading OS with requirement of reinstalling all software is a real pain!

Unfortunately, there is not a way to reload the system without losing your applications. It is possible that the lazer in the disk drive has failed, but that is hard to determine without recovering the system, and seeing if it will burn discs from a clean windows install. You can try contacting technical support with your region to attempt troubleshooting via phone, but this type of issue is hard to resolve via email, chat, or forums.

I have experienced and read about this problem in a number of places on the Internet.  While I dont doubt that under certain circumstances, a hardware failure would lead to a DVD drive being able to read CD but not DVD media, I found it pretty hard to accept.   One quick way to test if the problem is hardware or software related is to insert a bootable DVD drive and try to boot from it.  Alternatively, you may want to try booting to Linux from CD or USB and then attempting to read DVD media from Linux.  If the problem persists even after booting to an alternative operaating system then it is most likely hardware fault.

if you do need to replace the drive, be sure to get one with a compatible interface.  Here's a handy reference graphic...  http://www.newmodeus.com/pics/OBHD/OBHD-Matrix-6.html

My Acer Aspire 5750 shipped with a PIONEER DVD-RW DVRTD11RS (firmware v1.01).  This has OBHD-SATA connection.  I ended up ordering a replacement drive on ebay.
