Battery symbol empty, screen won't "turn off?"

I recently updated my Windows software on my Acer W510. It's still running Windows 8, but since this most recent update I have had a few problems.

It started by the battery symbol always being "empty" whether plugged in or unplugged. There was no information about a battery issue, I just couldn't see whether or not it was charging. The tablet still worked except I had no idea when the battery was depleted until the tablet just shut itself down.

Next, my tablet screen stopped turning off! Whenever I press the "power" button on the side to put it to sleep, or just try to put it to sleep, the screen goes off and immediately comes back on. If I shut the whole tablet down it is fine, otherwise the screen just stays on until the tablet runs ot of power.

Most recently, I have been getting the message "No battery is detected" and a little red "x" next to the battery image. My tablet still stays on when plugged in, but if I unplug it it immediately crashes (this has only started in the last hour or so).

Now, the LED light next to the power button is blinking red on and off. I'm not sure what this means.

Has anyone else encountered this "screen always stays on" problem??? I've had this tablet for a few years and never had any problem until this update two days ago. I'm not sure what could possibly be going on to initiate this issue and then have it evolve into an issue with the battery not being detected.
