Aspire E11 (E3-112-C4HJ) won't boot - corrupted BIOS?

My son's E11 refuses to boot (99% of the time). When you press the power button, the activty light flashes once every 5 seconds but the BIOS doesnt load (ie. The Acer logo does NOT appear).

Randomly, it WILL go ahead and boot into Win10. Once up, its flawless - I've managed to run a mem test, so would rule out RAM or HDD problems. The unit is out of warranty, so I opened it up, checked all cable connections, even volt meter tested the BIOD battery - its 100% as the laptop is only 18 months old.

So... my only conclusion is that the BIOS needs reflashed. Am I right to say you can somehow load a bios update to USB and trigger it at boot? I have read that Fn+Esc+Power can do this?

Also.. I got the latest bios update off the drivers page - but its a .exe. Whats the process to force this update (outside of windows)?

Thanks!

Just to add - I've done a power reset AND physically removed the battery. The laptop has just started up all on its on (after pressing the power about an hour ago!).

I ran the Windows based BIOS update - and the laptop went to restart... and is now stuck again, unable to get to the ACER logo/screen.
