I have an AspireZ3 desktop computer. The DVD/CD/Optical Disk Drive is no longer working.

I have had my Z3 for over a year. Shortly after the warranty period, my dvd/cd/optical disk drive dropped from view on the Device Manager. It will not open using the eject button. I have past computer repair experience but it has been sometime since I last practiced such tasks. Is there a way to verify that the drive is no longer functional beyond the observations I reported? Could the loss of functionality be due to a motherboard/interface issue? Or is it more likely that the drive failed completely and can be replaced with proper instructions on dissassembly and reassembly? Or is it recommended that I should use a repair service due to the complexity of replacement and testing?
