Mouse cursor drifts to left at bootup and won't move thereafter; hardware or software issue?

I have an Acer Aspire One 532h-2588 that I bought reconditioned from Micro Center. It worked just fine for many months, then suddenly a curious glitch started and I've not been able to make it go away.

At bootup (or very shortly thereafter) the mouse cursor will drift straight left to the middle of the left side of the screen and then just stay there. I had an external Microsoft mouse attached via USB so I tried deleting the driver for it (and unplugging it) and rebooting--same problem. Then I tried removing the touchpad driver. Still had the problem. Tried connecting the external mouse and rebooting to see if it would find that and still not install the touchpad driver, but that wasn't successful and the problem persists.

Is this likely to be a malware problem? Or a hardware problem with the touchpad? Or what?
