Why does my aspire E-15 have to be turned on then off before it will boot up
my aspire E-15 will not boot up properly. It starts, then screen goes black. If I pull the power out, screen comes back on, but goes dark if I plug power back in. I see the screen brightness is reversed when I look at power options.
I have to turn on/off button off, then immedialtely turn it back on. Then the boot is very, very slow.
Is Acer ever going to fix this?

try a battery reset. Remove the power. Turn laptop oner and find the tiny hole in the bottom. Insert a paper clip and gently push until you feel a click, hold for 5 seconds, let it sit for 5 minutes. Before you plug it in, check your power supply with a multi meter or have it checked.

See if the laptop boots. No? You will need a large USB drive or a usb HDD to save your data.
Hold Alt + F-10 at boot and see if Recovery starts. Do a Full Factory Restore.

Maybe I did not make it clear. I am using Windows 10. The battery and charging system are ok. I have found that the screen brightness is reversed. Bright means dark, and Dark means bright in power options. I can turn the brightness to dark in "power on", then plug power back in and screen is ok. However, after the computer sleeeps, I have to turn the bright back to its proper setting (bright) and the computer will operate correctly until I turn it off again.
Then I have to go through the same process again on the next power up.
Why when booting up win 10, are the brightness controls reversed in power options?

E-15 is not a model number. What's your model.
Did you upgrade to Windows 10 or it came with it and you've had this problem since new>

the Model is E5-511-P0GC.
I came with Win 8.01 on it. I upgraded to Win 10. I see on the internet that others have discovered that the brightness controls are backwards in Win 10. There was a post about changing a setting in the registry, which I tried, and it made no difference at all. So far, I have found solution.
When I boot up, things start normally, then screen goes black. If I pull out power cord, the screen comes on ok. I then go to power options, run the "plugged in" brightness to dark, the plug power back in. All is ok and continues boot up but very slowly, After the first sleep session, I have go to power options again, and run the "plugged in" brightness to bright. All is ok, but computer is very slow to respond to commands.

Are you running the VGA_Intel_10.18.10.4242_W10x64 driver? If not, try it,
VGA Intel VGA Driver 10.18.10.4242 121.4 MB 2015/08/18 Download If Windows 10 will let you.
This seems to work for a few people. The screen will go dark and then revert to default driver and you can re-enable,
1. Window + X
2. Go to Device Manager
3. Drop down Display Adapters
4. Right click on your display adapter (mine's Intel(R) HD Graphics)
5. Click on Disable. Screen will blackout for a few seconds.
6. Once it returns, right click again and click Enable.
7. Try your brightness keys.

I installed the .4242 graphics driver, and no change in my problem. I was running .4276, which Win 10 said was newer than the .4242.
Thank for trying to help.

It is strange that with power plugged in, the brightness control for "plugged in" is backwards. When I pull the battery charge plug, brightness is ok. When I plug the power back in, the screen brightness is low.
Since my lap top came with win 8, I am wondering if I should try to go back to win 8. Win 8 was also very slow, had now noticable problems.
With a quad cpu, I really think the computer should operate faster than it does. I wonder if the slowness is just a poor quality HD.

To me, there isn't enough different about 10 to deal with the driver problems. I tried it and went back.
The stock HDD is 5400 RPM.
Get a WD5003AZEX Black 7200 RPM HDD or a SSD and it will be a lot faster. The Black is warranted for 5 years.

Ok, I have found a solution that seems to work. I found the answer in this community, I believe. I have set the brightness slider to half way on both battery and plugged in. Now when I boot up, the screen stays normal, although it is not quite as bright as full on. The brightness slider is still backwards on the "plugged in" side.
Interesting.
Thanks for all the back and forth. I will consider getting the faster HD installed.

Hey there ClipperSailor
I'm sorry to hear about the problems, I must be irritating to swap back and forth the brightness levels.
I would try contacting Acer or Microsoft's live support for this and see if the OS itself has the setting turned around or if there's a specific update for the computer for this. I would try checking if all the latest OS and driver updates are installed on the computer and try a BIOS reset.Regarding the boot/wake times, this is mostly affected by the speed of the storage drive so I'd check its health with a tool from the manufacturer and see if the drive works properly. The recommended tool for Western Digital drives is WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic.
I would also try running a benchmark tool to see the speeds that the drive is working with.Post back if you have any questions!

The answer to the brightness problem with Acer E5-511 notebook is the latest acer bios 1.10. I had a Samsung 1t SSD installed today, and my computer guys found the new bios. Now the brightness issue completer sloved.
So, any Acer friends with the brightness control backwards be sure to try tne new bios 1.10.
Thanks again for listening to my sad tale.
by the way, this new HD is remarkably fast!
