Acer ES1-511 - Wireless mouse not recognized

I'm trying to troubleshoot my elderly Father's laptop. He purchased an Acer ES1-511 and it just came off warranty. The OS is Windows 8.1.

His Logitech M325 external mouse quit working all of a sudden. It's much easier for him to use a mouse versus the touchpad. The laptop will not recognize the small Logitech receiver (dongle) anymore, but it worked fine for months. I checked Device Manager and the mouse is listed (HID Compliant) and the computer tells me it's working (though it's not). "The best driver software for your device is already installed and up to date".

I have:

- Uninstalled Logitech Unifying Software. Upon an attempt to reinstall, it will not get past anything when receiver is plugged in. It cannot recognize it.

-tested the culprit mouse and receiver in my own Gateway laptop. The mouse works just fine in mine. Lights are on, fresh battery. Plugged receiver in my laptop and all is working. It's not a mouse problem.

- tested the 2 back USB ports on my Father's laptop with a USB/microphone set of portable speakers I have. The USB ports work nicely and successfully on both ports.

- Called Logitech and they told me to call Acer. Maybe a drive is corrupted?

-Called Acer and they were of no assistance but to recommend an extended warranty and told me there are driver downloads on their website. Just download them. I wasn't sure what to download as its all confusing. If I download any, does it overwrite what's already there? I thought I could get some advice, but all of a sudden I was cut off from their end. I was kind and patient. That's my nature.

- I  then decided to "refresh" the computer. That is the option where you don't lose any files. Took forever. No changes.

- Ran Windows Defender and Malware Bytes to check for viruses. At this point I'm trying anything.

- Took the chance and just bought a new wireless mouse. This time I decided on a Microsoft mouse vs. Logitech. The "Plug and Play" receiver is not recognized either in this laptop. I know the USB ports work after testing USB style portable speakers.

I just want to get a mouse working again for my Dad with his basic laptop, which has been great for him up until the mouse stopped being recognized.  He is technology challenged and I am too, although I might be one step up with patience in troubleshooting. Again, it's not the mouse. I ruled that our right away when it worked like a charm in my own laptop.

Any help is much appreciated!
