I have an Aspire E5-511 notebook.  It is a great computer except every once in awhile the fan will go off at high speed and then my system locks up.  It doesn't matter what I am doing.  It has done this while surfing the web, using Photoshop, or Open Office.  The only way out is to shut off the computer.  There is nothing in the event logs - only that the computer was shut down unexpectedly.  Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

    Hello Deby.

It almost sounds like that your system is Speeding up the Fan in a Race to try and cool off your System... Then because it gets to hot and not able to cool well enough as a way to pertect your system it shuts off.

There could be a few reasons why this happens. Again it is a way to Pertect you from a total melt down...

One make sure that you have good air all around the ports to your computer. One of the things I see people (Hear people do) is they will have the laptop proped up on some Blankets, or a Pillow so they can have a better feel and sight of the system. however that makes it so the air can't get into the Ports to help cool....

Another issue that could be.. If you live in a High Dust area it could be that your fans have to much dust on them and not able to move the air... At times if you look at your fan fins they may look clean but where the air goes at times are Fins for the Heat sink and is a good Dust trap....

Also another issue that can happen is if your system is used in a Dinning room that is connected to where you cook. If you don't have the right Exhaust while cooking and if the computer is on it can take in that Moist air and then trap dust that could be from taking it out side...

Same thing when using your system and then going outside, it is cooler outside then you take in the house it can form some DEW and then as it is drawing in air for cooling it can collect and even pack on Dust...

A few things to look at.. Hope something was helpful

Please note there isn't anything in this post that is directed towards anyone person. Just Ideas of what can happen and wehre to look.. I am not saying that any person has a dusty home or!!!!! Just a Offer of what I have seen in many years of computers....

Thanks James, unfortunately this is not the problem.  The laptop is in an AC room on my desk.  I do agree it is speeding up to stop a melt-down.  But from what?  A mystery.  Thanks for you time.
