Aspire E5-571 52GR touchpad not working

My laptop (Aspire E15 E5-571-52GR) precision touchpad stopped working couple of months ago. I am managing with a wired mouse. I tried switching the touchpad on and off by Fn+F7, no luck. Initially right click stopped working while left click, drag, etc still worked, now the touchpad is completely disabled.

I realised a week ago that I completed my 1 yr warranty in Dec!

Any help with touchpad issue is much appreciated.

Regards

Radhika

OK. At this point, I don't believe your precision touchpad issues are hardware-related. So I'd like your opinion on if you think this microsoft link & video relates to your particular situation as there generally seems to be common complaints associated with this new user interface.

Check device mgr for touchpad issues. Report back.

Thanks very much for looking into my problem.

Device Manager does not list Touchpad under 'Mice and Other pointing devices'

Under Human Interface Devices, there is a yellow triangle for 'I2C HID Device' with Code 43. Rest seems to be working fine.

OK. I'm gonna assume it's a corrupted software driver. Hopefully not a hardware issue. So go back to device manager. Delete the highlighted yellow-triangled HID device from device manager. This will delete its software drivers. Then exit device manager. On cold re-booting, windows will try to re-identify the deleted device. If it can, it'll re-install the drivers correctly. Report back.

    Hi again

The Device Manager now shows 'ELAN I2C Filter Driver' under 'Mice and other pointing Devices'.

Left click and Zoom in/out - working

Right click, select, drag scroll bar, etc - not working.

This was the case when the problems with touchpad first started two months ago, just mentioning if it helps in trouble shooting.

Thanks for getting something to work on touchpad. Look forward to further suggestions for all the touchpad functions to become up and running.

OK. You're doing great. Next run "main.cpl" without the quotes. In the box that pops up, start playing around with the settings to see if you can get right click, select, drag scroll bar, etc to start responding. Report back again with results of playing around. 8^) We'll go from there.

I tried 'Switch primary and secondary buttons' 'Double click speed' 'Turn on ClickLock'

no difference in the touchpad response!

Left click, doubleclick (selects the word on which the pointer is), Zoom in/out are working like earlier.

OK. What Windows version do you have? And is it factory-installed or did you upgrade?

Windows 8.1 and came when I bought the laptop.

I keep getting messages to upgrade to Window 10, but haven't upgraded.

OK. At the top of this screen, click the support button. Then choose your country. Then click drivers and manuals. Then select Notebooks. Then Aspire. Then scroll down to E5-571. Select Windows 8.1. Then download and install the Elantech touchpad driver version 13.6.1.1 even if it's the same version already on your machine. Report back.

    Done...still no good.

Also checked Device Manager, everything seems to be fine.

main.cpl tried various options too as suggested earlier.

Return to main.cpl. What do the hardware and device settings tabs reveal right now?

What does the Elantech "change settings" option allow you to change?

    Jack

Thank you very much for all your time and inputs in solving my touchpad problem.

The link helped me understand the touchpad interface. I am not sure if these functions came up as an upgrade, initially the touchpad was working like a normal mouse right & left click and suddenly I found a difference since Oct.

Anyway, now that I know how to use it, problem solved.

    Many thanks

What kind of an upgrade and/or update do you think it might've been? If you're sure it was working like a normal mouse before October, and you'd prefer it that way, you might try to back up your data since that time and then restore your system to some earlier date before October. But, since you seem satisfied at the moment, might not be worth the effort.
