ATC-705-EB53 graphics upgrade?

I don't use this desktop for games, and the most intensive graphics things I do are: (1) watch streaming video, and (2) do some light photo editing with Photoshop Elements.  Would adding a graphics card be of any benefit to me?

Thanks,

Tom

I am not sure if you are just doing as you have stated then as it sits from Factory should serve you well...

However if you are doing some PICTURE Touch up with say 4800DPI and it takes a long time to Render your photo then I would say MORE Ram and Better Graphics would be great. But if you are just doing standard Edits, and some normal small game Play from the Store say... Then your system is good the way it is I would say...

However if you start to do Large Picture Touch ups and Repair of Old photos, Then I would say get some more Ram. MORE PSU (Power Supply) and GPU (Graphics)...

    James...

Thanks for your reply.  I do pretty much as I've stated, and rendering delays are minimal.  Occasionally the lip sync on streaming video slips a bit, but I don't know if it's my computer or the intertnet that's at fault.

I've upgraded to 16GB of RAM, so probably don't need much else.  But if my photo touch-up gets more complicated, could you suggest a good graphic card I could update to?  Or a couple of cards, if you'd prefer not to recommend just one manufacturer.  I don't feel capable of replacing the power supply, and would be just looking for the best card  I could plug in and expect it to work with this system.

    Thanks,

    Tom

Well for Ram your good I would say...

About Update for your GPU. If you don't want to upgrade your PSU then I would say the best bet would be a GeForce GT 620. Or you could get the GT 640 GDDR5 if it is the normal GT640 it needs a bigger PSU so would need to make sure what ever you get is going to be a small foot print card and will run with a 300watt PSU

However the PSU upgrade for a computer is rather easy. There are many good PSU out there. If you are not going to get into some thing to much I would say a Nice 550 or 650 PSU is all that would be needed for a nice Graphics card. However just remember to look at where you card would go and make sure that the card you buy will fit in that space. Also in some cases you can get around some issues with cables by a careful cable Mod. They do have some sites that offer these mods but if you get a Graphics card that is not to log like the GT 620 630 or 640 you should be fine. There is even a GTX960 that is made for ITX that could be a good card but that would need a better PSU for sure....

Bottom line as I am sure you are aware. A GPU upgrade will make your system run faster But with what you have a if your machine is running the i5 with the intel 4600 HD graphics and upgrade to 16gb ram it may not show much improvement over what it is now... What I mean is the 620 and 640 has some improvement areas but not much over the built in Intel HD 4600. To have better inprovement you would need a PSU upgrade and better GPU for much improvement

Based on your usage, I would skip the graphics card and buy a Solid State Drive (SSD) instead.  You'll see the most performance improvement there.............. based on your usage.

If you did decide to get a graphics card, the max PSU you'd want to get is 450 watts.  Anything above that would be overkill and wouldn't be efficient.

    James...

Thank you for the thorough explanation.  Since as you say there wouldn't be much improvement with a card that suits my present power unit, I'll wait a while and see if I may need something better in the future.

Thanks for taking the time to deal with my request for information.

Thanks for the SSD suggestion.  I'll keep it in mind for future improverments.

It might be beneficial to others if you shared any benefit that you received from installing the GT730 graphics card based on your usage.

I'm not a gamer so have nothing to add on that front.  As I said earlier my video stuff consists of video streaming (mostly from online courses) and light photo editing in Photoshop Elements.  I think I notice some slight speed improvement, particularly when I have a lot of photos loaded, but it may be that I'm just hoping there is!  Certainly there was no major enhancement.  But then I wasn't expecting one.

Ok.  I didn't realize you weren't expecting one.  Which of course makes  no sense to me, but a lot of things make no sense to me. Smiley Wink

Most everything that I can find says the GT730 offers no performance improvement over the HD4600 (for your usage that you posted in the first post) and some might even consider it a downgrade.
