HELP! Have now experienced the black screen of death!

My laptop Aspire 5742 has now got the black screen of death! Help!

The laptop will start up, but when it gets to the login screen, everything goes black. Windows is running in the back ground and I can login, but I cannot see anything!

Tried many ways to get back into the system, and eventually I managed to, but I am only able to run W7 without the driver installed for the graphics card, the card is using the generic driver.

I have updated/downgraded to an earlier version of the driver, but it still produces the same problem.

I dual boot into Ubuntu which does not have any problems!

Any suggestions?

Do you get the black screen using just a single boot with the OEM operating system? You may try recovering the sytem to see if it resolves the issue. You can recover your system and reload Windows using the instructions at http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12869.

    Hi,

It sounds like your Windows 7 Operating system is crashed. Either some of the system files are corrupted or missing. This is purely a software issue, so you don't have to worry about anything dude, a reinstalling of Windows 7 will resolve the problem. But remember this will wipe out all the data from your computer and computer would be like a factory default one. Follow the instructions provided by the Acer Technician or just call up the tech support.

    Thank you Smiley Happy

I was hoping I didn't have to go down that route of reinstallation. Will try and have a go this weekend and let you know how I get on. Thanks for the advice.
