Can I add a second hard drive to an ATC-605-UB11?

I'm about to buy this model and would like to add a second drive, keeping the current hard drive and the optical drive.  Is this possible?  Will I need to buy additional cables?  Will the new drive fit in the chassis, or will I need some mounting hardware?

Some of the posts have mentioned white and black SATA connectors.  What's the difference?

Yes, you can add an additional HDD or SSD.  The two white sata data ports are SATA 3 (6Gbits/s) and the black sata data port is SATA 2 (3Gbits/s).

I would recommend that you buy a sata power extension cable:

And a SATA data cable (you don't need a 90 degree one like I have---a straight one would work better):

The 4 mounting screw holes for the existing 3.5 inch HDD are obviously designed for a 3.5" HDD.

The 4 mounting screw holes for the second drive that you want to add are for a 2.5 inch SSD or 2.5 inch HDD.

I bought a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch adapter bracket because I didn't pay close enough attention at the time to realize that the holes line up perfectly for a 2.5 SSD.  So you don't need any kind of bracket if you add a 2.5" SSD.  You just screw it right in.

Here's the Crucial BX100 MLC SSD that I bought and recommend although any 2.5 inch SSD should work fine although I don't recommend the Crucial TLC BX200:

I also bought this one for a different computer and use as the boot drive for OS.  Works good when you have a bigger secondary HDD.  The price is right, but it's a little on the slow side from a SSD writing standpoint.  Boot times are fast however.

Here's an example of a 2.5 inch HDD (hard disk drive) that I *assume* would line up with available screw holes:

Just keep in mind that the HDD that comes with it is a 3.5 inch HDD.

Arrows in photo below represent the 4 screw hole locations for the second drive.  (ignore that I only have two screws Smiley Wink )

Edit: Since the DVD drive (ODD) is plugged in to a white SATA 3 data port, you'll want to move it in to the available black SATA data port,  And then use the newly vacant white SATA port for your new SSD or HDD.

    JordanB...

Thank you very much for the speedy, and especially for the detailed, reply to my question.  Also thanks for including the links for the cables and the hard drive.  I'm looking forward to doing the installation when all the pieces arrive.

    Regards,

    Tom K.

Just a follow-up note to say thanks again.  The cables finally arrived and I've successfully installed my new drive (the Hitachi one you mentioned from NewEgg).  With your clear instructuions all went well despite my large hands in a small'ish space.

I wound up with an ATC-705-EB53 instead of the 605 model I mentioned.  The seller apparently ran out of the one I ordered and substituted the 705, which seems to have similar specs.

Thanks for the help, and Happy Holidays.
