Aspire V3-572G extremely low microphone sound

I've had this issue for as long as I've had the laptop I think, but haven't realised until about two weeks ago.

I've tried to use the combination jack with my Logitech four-pin headphones, plugged in as a headset, with the mic and it wouldn't pick up any sound, or at least anything loud enough to be usable for those listening. So I've been using the laptop's build in mic and the headphones just for sound output, which has worked alright.

Recently I got a new set of heaphones with split speakers/mic cables, so I've used a splitted to make them try to work with the combination jack (two three-pin to one four-pin adapter). Same deal; no mic volume, but the speakers work fine. Plugging it in as only a mic gives basically the same result, and these are brand new headphones, so there's nothing wrong with the mic. The other headset had the same issue, so I don't think it's the adapter.

On a quick test, Audacity (audio editor) picks up the mic fine, even as a headset. Skype and the Windows audio configuration show the inaudible sound levels.

I'm running a later version of the Realtek audio drivers than are listed on the site (found through the Acer Care Center; v6.0.1.7589), the microphone volume is at 100%, mic boost is at +30dB. I've tried using the generic Realtek drivers and that just messes everything up. I'm at my wit's end here, and I don't want to have spent money on a new headset just for it to only half work with my laptop.
