I have the same Laptop along with others, and I am wondering if it was like some of the systems that had XP but the Restore Partition was for Win7? IS that what your talking about. There was no option to Restore XP only Win7? I had to buy a CAO for my machine seeing it only had the XP CAO.

If that isn't the problem, Can you as asked before maybe explain better.....

If you also are thinking about upgrading to Win10 from 7.

she received this after she completed tutoring and I did not get much tech support from the company who issued it trying to remove all of the software they had on it. I wanted to be able to access the internet. I haPpEned to pull it out today and try to work on it and it is telling me something is wrong with the security when in IE. IT Windows 7 starter pack. Do I need to download a newer version?

checking the update history and it states window 7 failed. That is the update that is needed. Can Windows 7 starter be reinstalled? I did the trouble shooting through Command Prompt but is does not work. The security is weak if I cannot update the starter pack. Do I need to update to a current version and if so is there a free version of Windows whatever?

Ok so on the bottom of your Laptop there is a Windows CAO. As you stated it was Win7 Starter, and the CAO should reflect that....

Restart the computer, and Press ALT-F10 when the computer starts. This should bring up your Recovery to Windows 7 Starter. Then Once you get done doing that Restore, *Also should note, If you don't have anythig on  there that you were worried about loosing then I would do a total RESTORE and not pick the save your items.* this takes longer but is the best way to go back IMO.......

Once it comes up you will have to input your CAO from under the computer..... Once that is done you can then install your UPDATES..... Once the updates are done and it can take some time.... You can then get a Icon for the FREE windows 10 update... Once that is there, You can click it and reserve your copy. Once it is Downloaded to your computer you can install it..... However so you know if your computer is going to be used for say a RP game of any type that requires you to have a good Current Graphics Driver. I would say then stay with Windows7 because there is no support for the Acer Aspire One D257 for Windows 10.... Not that you can't install it. Just they don't support it with Drivers...... All my Apire Ones are upgraded with 2 Gig of Ram. I have a D257, D255, D255E all have had Windows 10 on it. One the 255E I did have to do a restore back to 7 From 10 once but is back to running 10......
