Installing from scratch.

My Acer 5741G was running Win7 and Win XP using BCD. I loaded Linux Mint and everything crashed.

Recovery  discs don't work, it won't boot from C: and now it won't boot from CD either. Booting using an XP recover disc stalls at Recovery Console which requires a password. IT didn't ever require a password before this crash.

Any ideas how I can (1) circumvent the password problem (bearing in mind I can't load any progs) or (2) access/format the hard drive?

Not sure what's going on with your password problem.

I'm going to tell you what I would do, and it may not be good advice, so take my advice with a grain of salt since I don't have your laptop and I have no idea what that password problem is. But it is what I would do.

    I would:

    1. Take out that HDD from the laptop and install a SSD

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148945

    2. Create Windows 10 media on a different computer

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

    3. Reset my BIOS to defaults (and maybe even reset CMOS--replace battery)

    4.  Use my Windows 7 product key to upgrade to windows 10

    http://www.zdnet.com/article/next-big-windows-10-release-will-ease-activation-hassles/

    5. Use a USB enclosure or caddy to get my important files off that HDD

Important Note: Supposedly you can now enter a Windows 7 or 8 product key to get the Upgrade, but I've never tried it and can't confirm it works.  Threshold2 was released today to the best of knowledge.

Important Note2:  Your computer is not on the list of Acer supported Windows 10 devices.....which is why I said it may be bad advice since Win 10 may not work properly and you may have to go back to Windows 7.  But I would personally try it.  Proceed at your own risk.

Edit: I guess if you didn't want to replace the HDD, you could pull the HDD and put it in an enclosure and use diskpart clean...and then reinstall it.  Don't partition it or format.  Just leave it an uninitialized state (unallocated space) and do a clean install of whatever OS you wanted.

Edit2: Check the Microsoft blogs to see if threshold2 was actually released today.  I'm just not sure when it will be released this month.

Well I didn't take your advice, for which many thanks.

I eventually found a way of accessing the hard drive and used Paragon Partition Manager to reformat and partition the HD.

Now I have WinXP on one partition and Win7 on the other BUT

When I load XP, My Computer shows C:\ as XP and E:\ as Win7.

Salamand shows the same, C:\ XP and E:\Win7.

Partition Manager shows C:\ as XP and E:\as Win7.

When I load Win7, My Computer shows C:\as Win7 and E;\ as XP and Salamand shows the same.

This makes file transfers VERY DIFFICULT as I don't know for sure which drive I'm on.

Any ideas ahow to overcome this? (I've not come across it before)

Which ever O/S your on is going to be C: and everything else is a storage drive.

If you're on the Windows 7 drive and copy something to E:, when you boot into XP

    it will be on C:

Well you did apply a caveat!

I've resolved the problem of multiple partitions by creating a named directory in each partition so I know which one I'm really on.

Windows 7 allows internet access but XP doesn't as no Network drivers are loaded. I've tried loading drivers for the Broadcom 802.11n built in modem, but no luck.

How do I get internet access on XP?

Try installing the driver from device manager. Unzip the driver to a new folder on your desktop.

Make sure the driver is uninstalled in Programs and Features.

    Follow this guide.
