A power problem

I have what I believe is an E1 series Acer laptop.  And I have a small issue that has suddenly come up, and for no discernible reason.  Yesterday I had my laptop turned, and I stepped out for a short while.  When I came back, it was beeping periodically with the beep indicating that it had lost direct power and was switching to battery power.  Then it would switch back to outlet power.  Back and forth and back forth.  Sometimes it would be only a few seconds between switches, and sometimes it would be a couple of minutes.

I have checked all of the external connections.  I have unplugged everything that could be unplugged.  I have cleaned the connections.  I plugged the computer into a different outlet.  Even though nothing had changed from the time I went out until the time I returned, I examined the cord to see if perhaps there was a break in the wire that could be responsible.  I am no electrician, but it doesn't appear to be a broken wire anywhere, as the cord seems sound.  I have even gone and gotten some canned air to blow out the insides, wondering if possibly dust inside could have been the issue.

Nothing has solved the problem.  So now I am at a loss.  I suppose it is some sort of internal problem with the power supply, but I don't know if it's possible to find out on my own without taking it in.

So I am wondering if anyone knows if that would be worth the trouble and expense.  The laptop is almost 3 years old, so getting pretty much obsolete.  It works well and I have had few problems with it aside from a hard drive crash that was not the fault of ACER, but an issue with the hard drive manufacturer.  I enjoy the laptop and I would think it still has plenty of life in it otherwise.  But if this sort of problem might be expensive to fix, might it be time to think about investing in a new laptop instead?

Any ideas and advice would be appreciated.  This includes any further quick fixes that I have missed.

Thanks in advance.

    Hello Ken,

    1. Could you give me the first ten characters of the computer serial number (S/N)? Only the first ten.

    2. Do you have the possibility to check the ouput voltage of the AC adapter?
    3. Does the DC plug (adapter) hold correctly in the DC socket (computer)?

    Okay... first ten:  NXM09AA020...

I don't have the equipment to do that, no.

Yes, it seems to.  It is perhaps a bit loose, but it doesn't slip out on its own, not even part way.

And I suspect that these more technical questions are going to mean taking it in to be seen by someone...

Well, I guess you are unable to help me.  It would have been nice to hear back from you, though.  In any case I have found my own solution that seems to be working.
