Update Bios ES1-531 ?

Hello everyone,

Help me!

For over a week I've been trying to install Xubuntu on my brand new Acer. This works but only in Legacy Mode (therefore not in UEFI) and booting with acpi=off (at each ignition!), which is a problem since the indicator of battery condition no longer appears.

One possible solution from what I understood is to update its BIOS. But after very many different attempts, I still can not do it and no documentation exists for my acer model.

I await your answers! Thanks for your attention

PS: As I installed xubuntu, Windows 8.1 isn't on the laptop anymore.

Sorry english board here, so i will answer in english.

the only BIOS update available for your model, works under windows enviroment only; so no way to update BIOS without windows  OS.

about Xunbuntu installing only under Legacy, that's strange, since it's based on Ubuntu and using the latest version is possible to install using UEFI.

maybe you can try to disable Secure boot using UEFI; UEFI is way better for hardware support on Acer laptops.

(Oh right sorry, I'm a french dude in China, and as my vpn' server is in canada it loaded me on the english acer.com.)

As I bought my computer in China, I wanted to get rid of the chinese Windows 8.1 ASAP so I swapped it for Xubuntu 14.04. (I also did it because I love linux, I'm a year old noob)

I made a bootable usb with xubuntu and tried to install it in UEFI Secure boot ebabled, no xubuntu logo appaered but at least the "Try__ Install___ Reboot___ etc" menu did. After clicking on install or try : unlimited time black screen.

Then I disabled Secure boot : same result. BUT, when I used Legacy mode, the real xubuntu booting menu showed up, then I tried everything I could to make it work as there was a kernel panic n it said "Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the noapic option" (it made no sense to me it was a nightmare!). After days I found that booting with acpi=off was the only choice that worked.

ANYWAY. The options I think I have :

    - Downloading the english Windows 7 and installing it over Xubuntu to update the BIOS, then reinstalling Xubuntu praying that it will have solved the acpi=off problem.

    - Same as above but doing it in dual-boot to avoid erasing Xubuntu (I don't know how to dualboot though I'll have to learn)
    - Making Xubuntu work without updating the Bios, therefore I will have to find a way to boot in Legacy mode without disabling acpi, or to find a way to boot in UEFI,with Secure boot disabled.

But for the last option, I have absolutely no idea how that is going to be possible ! ! As I have the impression that I tried everything with both UEFI and Legacy. But you know, I'm a "noob" so there are probably other possibilities I couldn't find or understand. What do you guys think ?

First of all, i would re-install windows 8 for compatibility reasons and beacuse the BIOS contains a valid product key.

i know that Ubuntu is more heavier than Xubuntu, but it's worth a try to install it and check if it can boot under UEFI settings.

did you use Rufus to create the bootable USB?

have you selected Partition scheme EFI only?

Okay I've been doing some research, but I still have a few questions :

    - What do you mean by the BIOS contains a valid product key ?
    - What do you mean by have I selected Partition scheme EFI only ?

I make my Linux bootable USB with UNetbootin, and my Windows' with WinUsb (or Iso2disk when I can borrow my friend's laptop which is on Windows 7). I made a bootable USB with Ubuntu 14.04 and booted in UEFI Secure boot off, the menu without ubuntu logo showed up but black screen after I clicked on "Try ubuntu", it worked in Legacy though but I didn't carry on. So basically same thing that happened with Xubuntu.

I downloaded a cracked Windows 8.1 (in English this time!) that I put on a bootable USB with WinUsb. I tried to boot in UEFI Secure boot off and after showing a little windows searching message thing for 3 seconds, it said "No bootable device".

So I was thinking maybe it is because I made just one big partition with my whole HDD when I stupidely quickly installed Xubuntu. So the current partition is a 465.52 Gb "lvm2 pv", I thought I should shrink it to then create a 50 Gb NTFS partition (to receive WS8.1) that could then maybe make my Windows 8.1 Bootable USB work in UEFI ? I actually really doubt that but I'm just trying.

    What do you think ?

That last idea causes problems because I can't shrink the xubuntu partition as I'm currently using it, so I,m stuck...... but that's another topic..

Just to not lose the thread : I only have Xubuntu installed, it only works in Legacy with acpi=off, so I want to update my BIOS. That can only be done on my model with a Windows OS so I try to install Windows 8.1 in dual boot with Xubuntu, then when everything is fixed I will erase Windows 8.1 again. (to probably replace it with Windows 7 which I prefer to have in dual boot with Xubuntu)

since your laptop has windows 8.1 from factory, you can install windows 8.1 back and have it authorized, since the product key is embedded  on BIOS.

Rufus is a software that can burn iso files to an USB and select various type of partition scheme; since your laptop is UEFI based, for better compatibility the iso must be burn selecting partition format for EFI BIOS.

the only way to update BIOS is to install windows and you don't need cracked versions, at least for windows 8.1
