My video refresh rate is extremely slow.  Any suggestions to speed it up?

    JoeJan,

Off the top of my head I would suggest reducing the quality of the game graphics you are playing, I do not see that this has a discreet video chipset in it so you are using integrated graphics (processor).

    Justin,

Thanks for the comment.  The slow video display is evident on everything (pictures, web pages, facebook, etc.) and especially on anything with video.  The only game I have tried to play is StarCraft II and it essentially crashes the computer.  I was hoping I could change some settings to improve things. I have pruned start-up to next to nothing, run disc clean-up, defrag'd the disc and switched from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.  Nothing seems to help.  Any other suggestions are welcome.

    JoeJan,

Would you provide the specific model you are using so I can check what the processor is, I fear that the processor might be vastly underpowered for what you are trying to do. From what I can see that system might use i3- and i5- 3rd generation processors, which are not bad, but they may just not have the "umpf" you are looking for. Smiley Frustrated Here is a SC2 thread that might help you out though!

My laptop is an Aspire V5 571P 6473.  The system info says Windows 10 home, Intel(R) Core (TM) i5-3317U CPU @ 1.7 GHz, RAM 8.00 GB (7.80 usable).  Intel HD Graphics 4000 with Total Available Graphics Memory 1824 MB, Dedicated Video Memory 128 MB, System Video Memory 0 MB, Shared System Memory 1696 MB.

    JoeJan,

Thanks for the update. If you have not, look through that SC2 thread I linked and see if that helps you out.

I did look through the SC II thread and have tried running SC II with reduced settings.  However, this issue is effecting everything including bringing up web pages, anything with a new image to display and is especially bad with anything that has imbedded video (facebook posts, news stories, etc.)  It occurs with only one thing open (for example one tab on browser).  The keyboard area sometimes feels warm (should the fan run all the time?)

    JoeJan,

The fan runs to cool the processor, you may just need to do some cleaning on the system. Typically, blowing in the vents with canned air (do not shake the can or hold it upside down when using) will get some of the dust out of there that might be building up. Over time, that dust can start to block the vents, just need to give it a good cleaning to make sure it is not clogged so there is proper air flow.

If you are watching and doing things on the unit that are "intense" or a high workload the processor will work as hard as possible to do what you ask it to, increasing in heat to do so.
