Hi guys,

I'm having great difficulty installing Windows 8.1 from a clean boot on this laptop.

At the moment, I get up to the stage "Getting devices ready" and then the computer freezes.

At some point I also got the CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT error.

I have tried to go through the installation process at least 30 times in the past two days to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Are you trying to use erecovery?  Or install Windows 8.1 from a USB drive?   You're using Acer factory default recovery media?  Or are you trying to install a clean copy of windows 8.1?

Do you have any peripherals connected to the computer's USB ports when you are trying to install?

Edit:  With these newer computers, sometimes you have to shut them down and then unplug the power cable from the electrical outlet and remove battery if you have  laptop.  These newer computers are "always on" and you can never get a cold boot to initialize the hardware unless you do the aforementioned.

Sorry, was in a bit of a rush to post that in frustration.

I am using Windows 8.1 from a USB drive, a clean copy of Windows

No peripherals, just the USB drive, I've tried with both UEFI and Legacy in the BIOS and also changing the Trackpad to Basic, etc.

Ok.  That's easy to fix then.

Follow the 13 steps to get it going.  You can skip step 14 since you are just using a clean copy of Windows 8.1.  It sounds like you've already completed steps 1 and 2.

In my BIOS on my acer desktop, <<F9>> loads the administrator defaults.  And <<F10>> is to save and exit.  Not sure about yours.

Edit:  Let me provide some clarity to step 5.

Step 5.  Boot the Microsoft media USB, and after you select your language, click on "Repair your computer"

I tried it again, and this time got past the "Getting devices ready" screen, only to fall again at the "CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT" error

I remember seeing a solution to about editing a value in the Registry but I can't seem to find the page again.

Thanks for your help thus far Jonathan

Did you follow those 13 steps?

If you have successfully installed windows 8.1, there are windows updates to resolve watch dog error.

Also, are you going to Acer's website to get your drivers?

Do you still have the erecovery partition or you wiped the HDD?

if you still have it, i would try an install from it (ALT+F10) at boot.

that kind of error normaly comes from CPU cores not working well, maybe old BIOS or some ACPI state going crazy at first boot.

not an easy solution and having the old Acer recovery partition intact or backuped can help to narrow the issue, if it can boot.

Another thing to try is to installa on battery if full charged, the AC charger maybe can heavly throttle the CPU and giving this error.

@Jordan: the error appears at the end of installation if i understood, so he can't even download or install updates.

Did you have windows 10 technical preview on the computer?  If you did have windows 10 technical preview installed on the computer, the only way I could install windows again was to follow those 13 steps.

If you didn't have windows 10 technical preview, follow ironfly's alt-f10 suggestion.
