Aspire 5742z-4601 Problems

I purchased two Aspire 5742Z's a few years ago.  I have had nothing but problems with them from the start and am so disappointed in this purchase.  I have even had one worked on but the performance did not improve much.  They seem to be back to their old tricks.  I was hoping someone could help me get them less annoying again.   My problems with one is:

 

1)  it always wants to update every time I shut it down and it takes forever to update.  What is that about?  Is that a hardware error?  Can it be fixed?

 

2)  two of the three usb drives do not detect anything plugged in.  Can I get them to work again?

 

These are just the two major issues I have with them.  I have restored the computers to factory settings but it did not solve either issue.  Can anyone help?

If your USB ports are not recognizing any USB devices plugged into them that could be a hardware problem, especially if you have already reloaded the system to factory defaults.
